Unturned Hovel

Vector Woes

After about six months of play we had the first run in with starship combat in Classic Traveller. I was excited to finally get to bust out the majority of book 2 and had prepped our whiteboard for it months in advance. We ran into one issue pretty fast which is that TLDraw has no means of consistent, fast measurement. Which made the drawing of vectors a laborious affair that slowed down the game tremendously. Coupled with some confusion presented by the rules, pulse vs. beam lasers, the two hour session quickly became an hour and a half of two different ship combats that were both a few rounds each. It was tough! Only a few players showed up that night, both of them also running Classic Traveller and not yet having done starship combat, were eager to figure it out and extremely patient. (Thank you Mistuh and Idraluna) In person, the vector combat would have been very fast with the usage of string and minis. But part of running online is understanding the strengths of your tools and where they are weak. My advice is if you want to run CT vector combat is to make sure whatever VTT you're using has some form of fast measuring tool and it'll be a cinch. I'd also keep the combat fairly small at first, a 1v1 or 2v2 at most. I am going to look at the hex-based starship combat presented in Mayday and the range band/advantage systems presented in Starter Traveller and various Cepheus games.

Part of running a long term game is dealing with the frustration of sessions and systems not really working out the way you intended. Adjust as needed and not letting the frustration stop you from continuing is just as important as useful prep and other GM skills.
