Childhood Appendix N
Jumping on the new bandwagon hotness!I am going to try and remember what really impacted my taste and excitement growing up but after so many concussions it gets kinda difficult! These range from like age 6-18
Movies/TV
- Robocop: I watched this movie way too young and the gore and the world it lived in was so textured and frightening.
- Dawn of the Dead: Another movie I watched way too young.
- Chinatown: The first movie I watched that I felt I had to understand. My love of noir starts here.
- Star Trek Re-Runs: My mom was a trekkie and I watched a bunch of TOS/TNG.
- Last of the Mohicans
- Pitch Black
- Scanners: Probably the first "cult" movie I watched.
- Disney's Gargoyles cartoon: That shit is extremely dope AS HELL.
- Pro Wrestling Tapes my dad had and watching RAW/TNA
Video Games
- Morrrowind: Obligatory if you are around 30. I remember the first time seeing this game was watching a friend shoot a fireball at a cliff racer near the Ghostfence. I thought it was a dragon...
- Diablo 2: The mood and vibes were catnip to a young mind. Add the gearing stuff and there was no chance.
- Arma 2/3: Getting a fully featured sandbox to make whatever you want in and also share that with friends is probably as close to GMing as you can get in a video game.
- Ultima Online/Everquest: Played on my cousin's account and was basically leveling alts for him now that I think about it. Harsh, player driven worlds blew my mind.
- Counter Strike 1.6/Source: The wide variety of community driven content and making the fun with friends was a big draw! UT2K4 probably counts here as well.
- DOOM 1/2: Video games have only gotten worse.
- Dwarf Fortress: Probably my largest exposure to the fantasy genre was playing this game since middle school.
- Space Station 13: My first times ever roleplaying with others
Books
- Lots of books about cowboys and outlaws.
- Warrior Cats: I read so many of these from like 4th grade on. I was huge into these books and probably read the first 18 or so. I was into them for the drama and the LORE.
- Sirius the Dog Star: A book about a god dog being reborn in an actual dog or something. I fucked with this book heavy in like 6th grade.
- The Things They Carried: One of my favorite books period.
- My Dad's maps and battle history books.
- Magic Street: I was in like 7th grade when I read Orson Scott Card's insane fairy realm but in a troubled neighborhood book. Now knowing how much of an uber-freak he is it is probably extremely vile. But I haven't read it since 7th grade and didn't know anything about anything then.
- Clive Cussler/Lee Child/Dad Core ass books: I would read a few of these a week after my dad finished them and handed them off.
- Dennis Lehane books
- Game of Thrones books
- Hemingway's short stories
- Land of the Lawnmower Weenies: The story about the slide that has a tumor that turns kids into the same non-descript 7 year old fucked me up in 4th grade.
